Learn about British farming

There are lots of different farms in Britain. Some farmers concentrate on raising crops, others breed animals, and some combine both crops and animals.

  • dairy farmers raise cows for their milk and meat

  • sheep farmers breed sheep for their meat and wool

  • chicken farmers keep chickens for their eggs and meat

  • arable farmers grow crops such as wheat, barley, oats, maize and oilseed rape

  • fruit and vegetable farmers grow a wide range of produce depending on the climate and soil in their region. British-grown vegetables include cabbages, potatoes, carrots, spinach and broccoli. Fruit includes apples, pears, strawberries and raspberries.
