micro-wind turbines

building the UK’s largest single application of micro-wind turbines

In 2005 we initiated a project to install 19 micro-wind turbines on the roof of our 13-storey CIS building on Portland Street, Manchester.

This is the largest-ever commercial application of micro-wind turbines in the UK to date, and will generate 44,000 units of renewable energy a year – more than 3% of the electricity needs of the building – and a saving of 19 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

The development of the 3m tall micro-wind turbines are anticipated to operate in excess of 10 years. At the ‘switch on’ in January 2006 by Climate Change and Environment Minister Elliot Morley, Co-operative Financial Services chief executive David Anderson explained:

"Climate change is not some remote issue for future generations to deal with. It has, in various forms, been with us for some time and is impacting on us all here and now. However, micro-generation can play a part in weaning our society off fossil fuels and it can also save companies money. A win-win situation for all."
